So, you want to feed raw. But woah- that’s a lot of options. How do I choose the brand that’s right for my dog or cat?

There are a few main considerations when it comes to choosing the right brand of food for your dog or cat.

  1. Convenience. Each brand will offer at least a few different options in their bag & patty sizing. The most common offerings include nuggets (approx .3oz), sliders (1oz), small patties (8oz) and large patties (16oz). Feeding a 6lb chihuahua versus a 150lb Great Dane will mean a significantly different amount of food you feed each meal/day. Frozen raw must remain frozen until it’s ready to be defrosted and fed, while freeze dried is shelf stable. Most people feed primarily frozen unless they are traveling/camping, etc. in which case freeze dried can come in handy!

  2. Sourcing. Some brands use strictly certified organic, whole food ingredients with no synthetic vitamin packs, while others aren’t all organic and rely on the use of added vitamins. Sourcing of meat can also vary based on how local it is, whether it’s free range, etc. That leads to the next consideration…

  3. Price. The cost per pound for food will depend on a few things. First, the type of ingredients and sourcing as stated above will affect the cost. Next, the quantity you are purchasing; small bags generally cost more per pound than a bulk box. Finally the protein itself will make a difference; chicken, beef, turkey and other “common” proteins are more affordable, while “novel” proteins such as venison, rabbit, and emu will cost more. Frozen raw is always cheaper than it’s freeze dried counterpart and most brands do offer both versions of their formula!

  4. Finally, more for our cat folks: texture! Raw for cats commonly comes either in a 24oz tub or a slider/patty form. This will affect the texture of a food and some cats do have a preference (dogs much less so). Freeze dried raw will also have a much more “customizable” texture than frozen raw as you can adjust the amount and type of liquid you add!

Now, possibly the most important note: you don’t have to choose just one! Most pet parents find that there is more than one brand that meets their family’s needs and can rotate between options for extra variety in the diet.
